C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters, #16
This Letter is about church. The actual, physical church - the preacher, the sermon, the congregation. It seems the young man in the story has been attending the same church for over a year, and this stirs considerable interest among the demons. They don’t like us being a regular part ("member") of a healthy church, because that's where we are spiritually nurtured, fed, encouraged, and supported. Where we can learn and grow in our faith. Yes, when church is ‘done right’, the demons are understandably nervous.
However, when church is ‘done wrong’, the demons are quite content with, even supportive of, our regular and dedicated involvement. In order to explain, I offer:
“6 Things Demons Love About Churching”
All righty then. That was interesting. A little cage-rattling, perhaps. Let's talk about it.
I'm going to step on out here and admit that point #2 probably hit me the hardest on a personal level. I don't know that I've been a "church shopper", but I do have very clear ideas on how I want "church" to be:
a.) The pastor doesn't have to be skinny-jeans young, but I do expect a level of hip-ness.
b.) I want the church people to be friendly, but I don't want them getting 'too close'. And, please don't say to me "We haven't seen you here in a while" when I return after being absent a week or two.
c.) OK, I will work in the children's ministry, but only with those old enough to be potty trained. And only like 2 Sundays a year.
d.) I won't sing in the choir, but I would love to be the lead singer of a cool worship ("rock") band. (Only the latest contemporary music, of course. No hymnals.)
e.) Raising your hands during worship is acceptable behavior I suppose, but if you start dancing or speaking in tongues, I get a tad nervous.
Certainly, these demands are incredibly reasonable, not to mention essential to my spiritual growth.
